Turnovers, Penalties and Playing With Injuries Cost Steelers In a Big Way

December 20, 2011 by

On a night that saw the Steelers game delayed at the start by 20 minutes due to a power outage and then another delay for 16 minutes due to another powers outage in the 2nd quarter, the Steelers offense suffered a power outage as well. After the Ravens lost their game last night at San Diego, the Steelers were given the opportunity to control their own destiny. If they had been able to win tonight and win the final two weeks against the Rams and Browns, they’d win the division and gain the top seed in the AFC meaning they’d only have to play two games, at home, to get to the Super Bowl. Now, after this horrific outing, they are staring at the 5th seed in the AFC and 3 road games if they want to return to the Super Bowl. That’s not set in stone, but the cement is drying on that outcome.

This wasn’t the night that anyone in the Steel Nation was hoping for. We all knew Big Ben was going to play on his injured ankle, but we didn’t expect he’d look as bad as he did. He tossed 3 interceptions and added a fumble as well. While he did throw for 330 yards, he didn’t look good in doing it. We’re not knocking the guy, he has the heart of a lion just going out there and playing on that ankle. The same injury kept the Steelers All Pro center Maurkice Pouncey out of this game. However, you could tell the injury was affecting the way Roethlisberger was throwing the ball and clearly his ability to extend plays. He didn’t have the same power or spin on his ball and he never really was able to escape any pressure put on him by the 49er defense.  The offensive line failed him as well.  In a game that they truly needed to step up and protect their leader, keep him from getting hit and hurried they failed. The O line gave up 3 sacks and 8 QB hits on their Super Star QB. That’s unacceptable.  The fact they couldn’t come through is disturbing. Max Starks was beat all night long and looked old and slow.  They just didn’t bring it tonight.

In our Game Day preview we stated the Steelers had to limit the mistakes, including turnovers and penalties. They didn’t do that tonight. We mentioned the four turnovers by Roethlisberger, the first interception he threw set the tone for the night. The Steelers were moving the ball on the opening drive of the game and got it into the Red Zone and Ben tossed a pick at the goal line. The Niners never looked back converting 4 turnovers into 13 points.  The team also added 9 penalties costing themselves 72 yards. You can NOT do that against good teams and the 49ers made them pay.

The lone bright spot on offense tonight was Rashard Mendenhall, he quietly ran for 64 yards on 15 carries, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. That’s a good sign an something we haven’t seen too often this year out of him.

Defensively the team was led by Troy Polamalu he seemingly was in on every play. He had a team high 7 tackles and was everywhere. Other than that, while they held the Niners in check most of the night, they finally wore down and gave up 20 points. They were unable to get a single sack and once again came out of a game without causing a turnover.  Possibly the worst news coming out of the defensive side of the ball was LaMarr Woodley leaving the game again with a hamstring injury. The team is going to need him for the playoffs and we hope he can rest it before then.

The Steelers need to regroup quickly as they have a short week and ‘trap’ game ahead on Saturday against the Rams. The black and gold needs to go out there and take care of their business and that’s all they can do. If the Ravens slip up somewhere in the final two weeks, then so be it, but for now the Steelers just need to win their games and get healthy in time for the playoffs, not worrying about seeding at this point. Blowing this opportunity tonight really put the first nail in that division coffin.

10-4, up next Vs. St. Louis, 2-12

This week’s News, Notes, Comments and Superlatives:

Star of the Game: None-how can there be in a loss?

The team should Cut: Shaun Suisham-No, his missed FG didn’t cost them this week, but he’s been far too inconsistent this year. At the very least, try some kickers out and make the guy think a little.

Bryant McFadden: He is irrelevant, when’s the last time you’ve even seen him out there? He’s taking up a roster spot at this point. Get rid of him.

News:  LaMarr Woodley, Ryan Clark and Mewelde Moore all suffered injuries, the extent of which will be determined in the next couple of days.

Notes: Hines Ward came into the game needing 9 receptions to reach 1,000 career. He left the game needing 9 catches. We think he can possibly do it, but it’s looking bleak.

Comments:  Mike Tomlin should not have permitted Big Ben to play once they were down 17 points with 9 minutes to go. He was risking further injury to that ankle and it made absolutely no sense for him to be out there.

Honor, Integrity, Commitment, High Octane….. None of the Above

This
was written by John Wagner from out good friends at Steel Nation Magazine. Check
them out at www.steelnationmagazine.com

The
setting is the Pederson Event Center 11 months ago. The newly announced head
coach Todd Graham and his entourage walks to center court. The fans are in a
frenzy. Coach Todd Graham proceeds to tell the student faithful and rabid
Pittsburgh fans how things are about to change. “High Octane” has come to the
city of Pittsburgh…trust me. Listen to what I have to say and what I have done
in the past…trust me. I am 100% committed to this university and am going to
bring a national championship to the city of Pittsburgh…trust me. The fans
bought into this hook, line and sinker. And why shouldn’t they? Todd Graham
came in boasting the top offense in the country the last couple years. He
conducted an offense that moved up and down the field at will. He would surely
bring in the type of athletes that would run his offense to a tee. He sold
himself to the Athletic Director Steve Pederson, he sold himself to the Pitt
Alumni, he sold himself to the student body and he sold himself to the fans.
Things were finally looking up. We had an enthusiastic up beat coach ready to
take on everything that comes his way. What a welcome sight it was after the
embarrassment that Michael Haywood brought to the university after being
arrested for domestic violence shortly after being hired as the Pitt coach. But
it wasn’t to be.

This brings us to today. When I heard Todd Graham resigned his position to
become the Arizona St head coach I was shocked. But the more I thought about
it, the less shocked I became. This is a person who has coached 4 teams in the
last 6 years. He said the same thing when he bolted Rice for Tulsa. He said the
same thing this morning when he bolted Pitt for the desert. We really shouldn’t
be shocked. The character of Todd Graham wasn’t damaged today, it was just confirmed.
Not only was he on a plane to the west coast before his players knew they no
longer had a coach, he sent a text to the assistant AD and asked that he
forward his message to the players. Not only did he not have the respect to
address his team or at least the team captains of his decision, he sent a
generic text message. He didn’t have the same honor, commitment and integrity
that he expected from his players. The same players that he called into his
office and sat them down and told them how their word was gold. How they should
be fully committed to his system because he was fully committed to them. One of
the many players that believed and bought into everything Coach Graham had to
say was wide receiver Devin Street. When Street heard about the events of this
morning, he had one thing to say. “Coach Graham is a liar” said Street. That’s
pretty strong words, however extremely fitting. This is the sentiment of many
of the Pitt players. They feel betrayed, and they should. These are 18, 19, and
20 year old kids that trusted their coach and would have run through a wall for
him. They did everything he asked without question because he was going to
eventually lead them where he promised. Well all that changed when hopped on a
flight with a bright red tie on and his wife wearing a Sun Devil red blouse.

Coach Graham was recruiting for the University of Pittsburgh as late as
yesterday afternoon. He was sitting in a young man’s living room talking to him
and his parents on how Pitt was the right place to come and play football. He
looked at that kids parents and told them to trust him, he would take care of
their son. He would look out for him and mold him into not only a great athlete
but a great student and person. I wonder if he will have even the respect or
courtesy to call that recruit and his parents and explain his decision on why
now Arizona St is the best place. I’m guessing he will show them the same
respect he showed all his players this morning.

The Arizona St AD in her press conference this morning said it was finally nice
to get someone that was totally committed to winning at Arizona St. Well it
looks like the car salesman made another sale. Todd Graham will stay at Arizona
St just long enough that benefits him and nobody else. He will come in with all
that enthusiasm spouting all about his promises about commitment, Integrity and
national championships. He should have that speech down pat by now considering
this is the 4th team he has coached in the last 6 years. But in this day in age
with the media, facebook, and twitter everyone knows the story. People know
exactly how Coach Graham has conducted himself in the past and the Arizona St
AD has nobody to blame but herself if he decides to leave after a short 11
months.

Roethlisberger Leads Steelers To Victory on One Leg

December 9, 2011 by

It was closer than any of us would have liked but the Steelers escaped their Thursday night battle with Cleveland with a 14-3 victory. The real story of the night however was Big Ben Roethlisberger. Towards the end of the first half Ben was tackled trying to extend a play and his lower left leg and upper ankle appeared to buckle. He was limping so badly that he had to be carted to the locker room and it appeared that his season and the Steelers along with it; may be in jeopardy. Luckily the x ray showed no severe damage and miraculously Ben returned to play in the second half!  Is there a tougher player in the league than Big Ben? He was already playing with a fractured thumb; he played with an injured foot earlier in the year and now this. You could see his return ignite the rest of the team as they were only up 7-3 at the half. They came out and they played really hard, they ran the ball pretty well, they protected Ben in the pocket and the defense did everything they needed to do to preserve the game.

Offensively Big Ben was the man; playing on one leg he was able to complete 17 of 22 passes for 280 yards and 2 TD passes. We had mentioned in our pregame to keep your eye on Antonio Brown as he seems to be unfolding as the top play maker on this team and he proved again why that may be true. With the game still in jeopardy with 3 minutes to play, the black and gold had the ball on their own 21 and Big Ben found AB for a big pass play in which Brown put on the moves, put on the burners and was gone, putting the team up 14-3 and icing the game. For the game Brown had 5 catches for a career high 151 yards.  Brown is a true threat and if the opposition wants to double up on Mike Wallace then Brown will make plays all day long. It’s nice to have a dual threat like that.  The rushing attack did its part for the most part as Rashard Mendenhall ran 18 times for 76 yards and Isaac Redman added 6 carries for 35 more yards.  We did see one area of concern however and that’s in the goal line set.  With the ball on the 3 yard line with first and goal to go, the Steelers decided to run the ball up the middle four times and could not punch it in.  Mind you, they were only up 7-3 at the time and a FG would have put them up a TD.  Now, we aren’t question the 4th and goal decision, we agreed with going for it. We do question the play calling and also worry about the inability to punch it in. Obviously Ben’s injury played a part and limited what play calls could be utilized but in all honesty it’s unacceptable to not score there.

With the rival Browns keeping it closer than comfort would allow some of the warnings we put out their in the pre game were coming true and it was heart stopping some of the time. We had mentioned that one of the ways the Steelers could hurt themselves was by turning the ball over. Not only did they turn it over 3 times, but two of them were in the red zone. They took points away from themselves. Playing better teams than the Browns and doing that will cause a much worse outcome. That needs to be improved. The good news here, it was Hines Ward and Heath Miller who committed the errors and those two rarely do that.  We had also mentioned that the Steelers needed to stay focused and at times you could question if they were. They committed a staggering 12 penalties totaling 97 yards. That’s another sure fire way of losing a big game. They were very lucky it didn’t wind up costing them this one. Several of those penalties were committed by Marcus Gilbert and Chris Kemeoutu.  They’d be running laps tomorrow if we were coaching.

While Big Ben was a stud so was the defense as they limited the Browns to 3 points, putting up a goal line stand to start the game and intercepting Colt McCoy late in the 4th only up 7-3 to preserve the game.  Ryan Clark led the team with 10 tackles and Jason Worilds added 9 with 2 sacks. Harrison and Troy were all over the field as well and while there were times where the team bent a little bit and let the Browns move the ball, they never broke. They stepped up and they got the job done.

The team now has about 10 days off before heading west to play San Fran on Monday 12/19. They’ll need to rest up, prep up and keep the wins coming if they want a shot at this AFC North title.

This Week’s News, Notes and Superlatives:

Stars of the Game-Ben Roethlisberger: Did you even doubt this. Playing on one leg, the man throws for 280 yards and 2 TD’s.

The entire Defense: They allowed only 3 points and stepped up in the Red zone a few times.

Unacceptable play of the game: With the Browns facing a 3rd and 20 in their own area in the first half they ran a draw play to just gain a few yards to punt. You knew it was coming, the crowd knew, the announcers, everyone, except the Steelers. They gave up 28 yards! Unacceptable.

Notes:  Hines Ward caught 1 ball moving him to 991 for his career. With 3 games left he needs to average 3 catches a game to get to that 1,000 goal of his. Can he do it? We thought yes coming in to this game but now we think it’s going to be really close.

Mike Tomlin stated Ben has a high ankle sprain, Pouncey has a high ankle Sprain and Polamalu has a tweaked hamstring.

A win’s a win and rest is rest. 10-3, up next at San Francisco.

Steelers Throttle Bengals in Critical AFC North Matchup

December 4, 2011 by

When the schedule first came out last spring and you saw the Steelers were playing the Bengals on December 4th, you, like us, probably looked at it and said to yourself; “that’s an easy December win”.  However, as this season has unfolded it became more and more apparent that this game would not be against the usual Bungles.   This team from Cincinnati is for real; they gave the Steelers fits the first time around and coming into the weekend they were in the 6th spot in the AFC playoff picture while the Steelers were in the 5th.  This game was critical, for both teams.  If the Steelers lost this game they’d have fallen to the 6th spot behind Cincy and would be fighting for their playoff lives. Win, which they did, and they’d have a secure handle on the 5th spot being two games ahead of the next set of teams in the AFC and would actually be tied for the best record in the AFC; giving them a chance to capture the division and a bye, pending the way Baltimore plays down the stretch.

Big games in December require teams to run on all cylinders and that’s exactly what happened today. The offense moved the ball effectively, led by Big Ben who completed 15 of 23 passes for 176 yards and 2 touchdowns in only 3 quarters before Tomlin pulled him out for rest. In our Game Day section we pointed out that the Steelers need to really start running the ball effectively down the stretch as the weather starts to get cold and the ball becomes harder to throw in bad weather and with Big Ben having a fractured thumb. Today the black and gold answered that call as they rushed for a collective 136 and Rashard Mendenhall was the lead do with 60 of those yards and more importantly, he added two powerfully ran touchdowns.  If he can run the ball like he did today, the offense will be even more dynamic and bigger threats than they have been. Couple that with Isaac Redman who added 8 carries and 51 yards and you have a strong duo.  The receivers were exciting again as Hines Ward led the team with 5 catches and Mike Wallace had two touchdown receptions, one of which was a highlight of the year type of play.  This offense clearly heard the doubters from last week after they only put up 13 points in their win at Kansas City and they had a chip on their shoulder.

The Defense was stellar as usual as they held the Bengals to 7 total points, 232 total yards, caused 2 turnovers and sacked Andy Dalton 3 times.  They got after the ball and didn’t allow any big plays, something they have been prone to this year.  We mentioned in our Game Day section that they needed to jump on these young talented Bengals and they did. We wanted them to keep Dalton on his toes and limit the touches AJ Green had.  Dalton was only 11 of 24 for 135 yards. AJ Green did put up a pretty good day getting 6 catches for 87 yards and a TD but the Steelers did a good job of scattering those catches throughout the blowout.

One more of our items to watch was special teams, we thought they would be a factor today and they certainly were. After the Bengals had a TD erased due to a penalty, they were forced to kick a field goal in the first quarter, which would have put them on the board first. Their attempt however was blocked by rookie Cam Heyward and the Steelers never looked back. Couple that with a 2nd Quarter punt return for a TD by Antonio Brown and you might say the special teams had one heck of a day.

Overall the team had it working in all facets of the game and this is exactly what they need to do as they proceed through the final quarter of the regular season and try to get as a high a seed as possible in the playoffs. Today’s only gaffe that we can think of was made by Mike Tomlin. With the Steelers pummeling the Bengals 28-7 late in the first half the Bengals had the ball inside their own 20 with a shade over a minute to go. The Steelers had 2 timeouts and elected not to use them. Why not take the 2 timeouts and force a punt and see if you can’t gain another score?  You can’t save timeouts, use them. Other than that, the team was prepared, ramped up and came out ready to go.

The Steel Nation Association Weekly Notes, Observations and Superlatives:

Stars of the Game-Antonio Brown-He returned a punt for a TD, had 2 catches for 67 yards and added a run on a reverse for another 9 yards.

James Harrison-He had 6 tackles including 3 sacks, he was all over the field today.

Hines Ward caught 5 balls bringing him to within 10 catches of 1,000 for his career. On his 2nd reception today he surpassed 12,000 career yards becoming the first player in Steelers history to do so and the 19th in NFL history. Hello Canton.

Rashard Mendenhall took over 5th place all time on the Steelers career rushing TD list.

Ben Roethlisberger became number one all time for completions in team history passing Terry Bradshaw with 2,026 career completions.

Great win and now the Steelers need to prep for a short week as they play on Thursday night against another team covered in orange from Ohio.

9-3, up next: Vs. Cleveland
